Well, there is two thing that is similar with the mother in the movie and my mother . Firstly, they both share the typical idea that their offspring would settle down with someone nice. Secondly they would settle down with someone of the opposite sex/gender (my differs a bit here, but read on and I will explain).
My mother's greatest concern now is that I don't have a boyfriend. She worrying has caused my younger brother to somewhat decide to 'help' me by taking me out and introducing me to guys. To which I told him, I don't have problems meeting guys and I have tons of guy friends and acquaintances . The issue is meeting that special someone that you feel connected to. I am sure many of my friends and colleagues would understand what I am talking about. It is not like going to a supermarket and picking the guy of your choice (oh, if only it would be that simple). Its about finding the connection.
I have actually learned more about guys during my last two years in NUS. I have met rather interesting characters who enlightened me to the fact that not all guys want to be my friend and that they are some who wanted more. The problem was at that time I did not know how to read signals from guys and thus never got into a relationship. The good thing however as all these characters ended up being my friends and I actually got closer to them and apparently the relationships which I foster with them seem to be something that was unique and they did not have to go through the preface of them being nice to impress me. The only problem was that I was still single though I had no qualms about being single as it gave the freedom to get involve with a lot more activities.
However it comes to a point of one's life that you need to be grounded back to reality. Just as my parents have an obligation to see that I settle down, I have an obligation to ensure I fulfill my duties as a daughter. At the same time it is also important that you eventually find someone to share your life with. The ride would be fun with someone to travel with you. So in the words of my mother I am back to square one.
Now the second aspect is where it gets humorous. You see at first my mother was worried with some of the guys I was spending time with. She felt they were not right for me. She went to the extend to ask me in a very serious & disapproving tone ( when me and some of these guys take photos standing close to each other) if there was something going on between us. That's when I drop the bomb shell, "Mom, err.. they are gay". And she would reply "öh..."in that weird awed expression. Then she would never question me again and would never bother me. However, this has happen quite frequently that now whenever I come back home after going out and say, "guess what mom?"and she would reply with a sigh, "he's gay isn't he?" So you see now my mother's worry is that the guys I go out with and enjoy company with are, in a large majority gay. So now you understand my second point. Its not about me being lesbian, though once I tried to convince my mom I was lesbian so she would stop bugging me. And this was what she said, you are too straight to be a lesbian, so forget it". I failed in vain.
I find it extremely funny when I think about my mom. I mean I understand the part about me settling down but I just can't help but laugh over the fact that my mom somewhere in her mind thinks that I will end up with someone who is gay. I mean a gay friend once suggested to me (since his mother was pestering him) that we should just get married to satisfy our parents and then live our own lives in the same house. It was not a bad idea but I felt it would be too complicated if either one of us found someone else interesting. The other option was that I have decided to travel and explore the world with some of my friends. So here I was planning my trip and activities that I want to do until a few days ago when faith sprang a surprise on me.
I am going back to school!!! Yup one more year of education for me starting in August. I am looking forward to studying again and more importantly that this means I get to be involve with more activities for another year. Hurray!!! Now my mom is happy too because for her I will be meeting guys in school again. Some of my friends were advising me to actual start dating when I get back to school. Some others are hoping that I would be attached soon (cosmological references) So I am befumbled and yet flattered that I have so many people who do care about my love life. And I sincerely thank them. I suppose only time can tell what is in store for me.

Hmm...what is a girl like me to do when you have a crazy life?
