Where have all the mentors gone?

Have you ever been in a stage of your life where you dread going to work and you get so overwhelmed just thinking of what trouble you are going to get into next? Well, that was my past two weeks’ experience. It was not so much the trouble but the inability of others to see out of the box because they never really knew that the box existed.  When people fail to see the box but you do, that gets you into trouble.

Sometimes I seriously wonder about people who are much older than I am and hold a certain position. Are they truly wiser and much more insightful? On a personal front, I have met people who are amazing and truly wiser. They are always there to give me a piece of advice when I need it. Take my mother and my friend, Harj for example. Two amazing people who are always giving me sound advice. My brother sometimes does that, and he is 5 years younger than me. These are people who I can count on for sound advice. And then, there are my motivators; my older colleagues and James, my Aussie friend who motivated me to go forth and do what I truly want and he is the same age as me. It is because of these people, that I truly believe that life has a lot more to offer me and that I can still trust and count on people in my life.

However, it is a pity that on other platforms, I find the existence of such people very rare. I was watching the Intern and I wonder, “Where have all these old, patient and wise people gone?” The CEOs, the protagonist wants to hire to save her business are no different than some of the people I work with; uptight, rigid, backstabbers. This is something, which has become a culture; that is growing in this capitalist society of ours. I understand that politics is everywhere, but to have it become a parasite to the development of young talent is despicable. I am not young anymore, but I am not rigid and oppressed like many, who hold positions.

It is rare to find people like the character played by Robert De Niro. A patient and insightful man who, sees the pride in people’s work. He works with people to develop and encourage them to do their best. I was surprised that the protagonist did not choose him to be the CEO in the movie but then again in the end I understood why. The protagonist did not need a CEO, she needed a mentor; someone to guide her and show her that she is talented and she should do what is right for her. She needed a person to listen and lead by example. Robert De Niro’s character did all that and more. I guess for me that was what I was expecting from certain people but to my horror, realized that it would never be. I was amazed how others could see the potential in me and, not the people I have trusted and worked with.

I guess, it is a sign for me to take a bow and move on. I am a bit apprehensive about moving on. It is always frightening. However, I know that there are always people encouraging me, people who see the diamond in me. For this, I am always grateful.
