Death cracked his knuckles. It felt good. He had forgotten the simple pleasures, one of the advantages of taking a human form. He also liked the smell of the person he has chosen to take.
Despite his height,
Travis was an exceptionally good- looking guy. It was obvious, that he was part
demon, his father was an incubus and anyone who looked into his eyes would know
he taken over his father’s good looks.
“Travis?”
Death turned to face the ever familiar voice. What he saw
metaphorically took his breathe away.
The storm was brewing and the dark clouds were gathering
rapidly accompanied by the strong gust of wind. She was standing there,
wide-eyed, her red lips slightly parted and her hair caressing her face. She
was clothed in a figure- hugging lacy black dress and dark heels. She was breath- taking.
“Travis? What in the world are you doing here?” she asked as
she approached him. He could not take his eyes of her as she slowly moved
towards him. He felt something spiraling out of control from down his pants. “Gosh,
was that desire in him?”
Inglis missed Travis so much. Her soul companion besides
Death. She always counted on him to be there for her when she needed him. Isn’t
that the purpose of soul mates? He looked more devilish as he aged, she thought to herself. Any woman
would be mad to not desire him. Inglis was warned not to fall for him, by
Travis himself but in the brewing storm, he looked too good to be ignored.
Death wanted to badly to lay her down and explore every inch
of her body. To see the way she moved at his very touch. Touch. That word
brought him back to reality. If he touched her longer than a second she will
feel every pain in the world. That was his curse. Death wished at that moment,
he, himself could die.
As Inglis approached Travis, she saw him turning around and
slowly letting his legs dangle on the edge of cliff. “Death”, she mumbled at
the sudden realization. “But why Travis?” she pondered. Then it struck her.
She
frowned her eyebrows and stormed ahead.
“Looks like you had an enjoyable night with Lesi” he mumbled
under his breath, staring straight ahead.
“Jealous aren’t we?” shot back Inglis. She was in her bitchy
mood.
“Me? Why should I? I just pity Juan, whom you apparently
spoke to the night after your date with Lesi. Don’t you feel guilty? You do
realise that Karma is going to come and bite your ass?” he remarked in the coldest
voice possible.
Something struck Inglis deep in her heart. She was in a
conundrum at the present moment. She sat completely quiet and lost in her own
thoughts.
Death realised she was no longer with him. She was not
clearly hurt by his remarks but it looked like she was confused and lost. He sighed. “A penny for your thought?” he asked.
“I don’t get it. My family seems to be comforting themselves
by telling me to watch my distance with Juan, now, that there is no possibility with
him but then….”
“Do you like Lesi?”
Inglis stopped and stared ahead. Death watched her
intensively. She was recalling the moments with Lesi. Her face was blank and at
intervals her eyebrows would arch down. She was clearly entertaining to watch.
She sighed, “He’s attractive in his own way but then again,
he gets me really irritated. He is so self-absorbed, absolutely intelligent, a
complete womaniser- disregards woman, a man with principles, an arrogant asshole,
a prideful person, a show-off… “
“But?”
Inglis was fuming but not completely with rage, “But what?”
“But there are parts of him you clearly like?” probed Death,
watching her intently. Inglis knew better not to face Death in his eyes. She
did not want him to mock the conundrum she was in. Deep down, she knew he had a
point. Death waited for a reply. She did not answer him for a long time.
“ I pity him” she finally answered him.
“Why?” he asked.
“Lesi had a hard time as a kid and even as an adult. He is
the pillar for many but none is a pillar for him. I have to admit that he is
not a womaniser… I know I was exaggerating… but he is so self- absorbed that he
does not realise at the rate he is going, only his brother will weep for him, and
that is if, you take Lesi before his brother."
"You have not answered my questions. Do you like him and why do you sympathise with him?" asked Death calmly. At the back of his mind, he knew she knew the answer. She had to. She needs to accept what she is feeling. It was important not just for her but also for the two men in her life.
She got up in a rage and in one breathe shouted out into raging storm, "I DEFY YOU, STARS"
"That is not answering my questions still", he repeated himself.
Inglis was at her wits. She turned around, her eyes ablaze with anger. Death could not help but admire the magnificent creature even though, he was aware that if he touched her, he would burn. " Until Lesi proves himself to be a competent man who is capable of feeling and Juan, a man to discourage me from falling in love with him, I see no need nor obligations to answer any of your stupid questions."
Death calmly replied, "Okie dokie", with a sly smile curved up at the edge of his lips.
