Inglis sat at the edge of her usual hide out, legs dangling
at the edge of the cliff. A storm was brewing at a distance but that did not
bother her. The waves came crashing on the rocks in fury and yet she did not
move.
The strong winds from the ocean engulfed her with its warmness and she
sat there staring blankly and tears running down her cheeks.
" Looks like the storm's approaching?"
Something in Inglis stirred. It spiralled from below her feet all the
way to the top of her head. It was warm and painful. That was anger and she knew it well.
The dark figure that spoke decided to take a form. It was
well aware that Inglis had heard It and has chosen to ignore Its presence. Not
to mention how she was in a rage and anyone who had the ability to see auras
would have seen the huge ball of fire engulfing her, encapsulated with
dark air of smoke.
Inglis refused to acknowledge the presence of the human figure
that sat beside her. She was well aware of who It was and was not in the right
state of mind to speak to It.
" You missed him, don't you?" It asked as It sat
and dangled Its legs just like her.
" You may have changed your form but your stench never
leaves you," she said, still staring into space.
It felt a slight pain. Her words had cut it. It smiled.
Pain, she was one of those who made It feel something that only people with
souls have.
Far ahead a lightning struck the sea. She took a deep breath
and turned to face the Being sitting beside her.
She was surprised at the form It has taken. Despite her mood, she could not help smiling.
"Sharuk Khan? Seriously? And from Jab tak hai Jaan?
"
"Well, it is something you can identify with at this
moment," it said.
Death was right. The image of the form had made her slightly
less irritable. He was looking at her through those beautiful hazel brown eyes. She
could see a huge amount of love and sympathy. Irony was the only word suitable
for that moment.
" Are you angry with the Gods? Or with me?"
continued Death when he noticed how her expression had become softer.
She wiped her tears. "I don't know if I should be"
and she paused. "I suppose not",
There was a momentary silence before she continued, facing
the approaching storm.
"Why do you all do this to me? What have I done to
deserve it? "
Death was about to open his mouth when she continued,
"Please don't tell me that it is because I was born with a gift. There are
so many people with gifts who have a normal life. What have I done to deserve
this? “
“Yours is not just a gift it is more than that. You are
doing things that has a big impact to the whole Universe”
“ Then why let me live in this manner? Can I not be an angel
or devil? Why a mere mortal?”
“Only, as a mortal can you help many”
Death watched as the tears started pouring heavily down her
cheeks. Inglis was in total distraught.
“ For once in my life, I met a genuine soul. Someone who is
kind and amazing. An old soul in the form of someone near my age. A companion
that I would love to journey with…. and…. he is not here to stay… Right, Inglis wants an exciting life, let's send her a variety of people and then we take them away and send her more. After all, it is all part of her learning process... cruel... nothing but cruelness.” Inglis buried her head in her hands and sobbed continuously.
Death was speechless. He rarely felt pain. He knew he could
not feel her pain but from the way her shoulders moved and the loud sobs, he
knew it must have been the pain of her heart shattering. He wanted to touch and
comfort her but the fear of the pain being passed from him to her stopped him.
Inglis could not control the raging emotions that were
building up in her. All these years and finally she understood the consequences
of having an exciting and pampered life. She was a sacrificial goat and each
time, it killed her intensively. She was
tired and exhausted. And yet, the thought of laying her head on Juan’s shoulders
mattered so much. Juan was someone she had a strong attachment to despite the short time spent together. He
affected her with such intensity. She did not intend to entertain him that much on his first visit. She made all the arrangements for a guy she hardly
met. She never understood why until she met him. She was completely taken in
when she found out that he was an old soul in a young body. He was her comfort
after so many months. She wanted him to be her companion but she knew that she
was asking for the moon. But she could not forget that two memorable days, her first kiss with him, the way their hands held each other, the Romeo and Juliet moment which they posed for. The way he lend her his shoulders to cry, the way he comforted her by the river. The night she felt something missing when he left. Suddenly Inglis stopped crying.
“Why don’t you just take me?” she asked Death. She was staring straight into
Death’s eyes. He could not face the teary girl who was carrying a huge burden,
he looked away.
“I can’t and you know why.”
She screamed and cursed and once again buried her head in
her hands and cried. Death did not want to look at her. If he had a heart, it
would have shattered into a million pieces. He looked ahead and saw how the
clouds had gathered and were as black as a raven’s body. Lightning flashed in
the sky. It was a beautiful sight. Death sighed and prayed that the storm would
soon come to an end for poor Inglis.
