Retirement

Yesterday was my last offical day as a young change maker. Today I am an alumini member. It has been two years since I first started of in NYC by joining NYF 04. It was a wise decision and I never regretted a moment doing so. I have USP to thank for that. People like Hui Yi, Imran, Alex, Larrisa, Penelope and Stephaine are friends that are hard to come by. It is hard especially to forget people like Hui Yi ,Imran, joyce and alan who were also working with me in NYF 06 research team. Those wonderful time spend at City hall burger king... SIGH....

But that is just one group of special people, throughout NFY 06 I also got to know a huge range of people whom if I have to list down will take two whole posts. Its just amazing how they have made my life so interested and loveable over the past two years. I felt so touched when last night martino shook my hand and asked me to keep in touch. The three martino- martina and denise gang are just one of those I am going to miss. I also have the NYC staff whom I am going to miss... esp Shawn's lame (yet intellectual... yeah right) jokes.

I had always assumed that retirement was a loss of identity because of the fact that we have always been taught indirectly all our lives that what we are studying and doing right now is to ensure that we get a a good job to support ourselves in the future. This form of ideology embeddenss have crafted our identity so far. But now to think of of it the embeddeness is not just the ideology of work but also the relationships that we foster through that work.

I suppose maybe that is why when people retire they feel upset not just because they feel less productive but because they are leaving a social network behind. Whether you like it your lives are intertwined with each other and retirement cuts the strings to these bonds even though people says its not the end of relationships.

Nevertheless a new path has opened up for me and Indiana Jones is on another adverture of her life.

Lingeh,

I agree totally with what you said.

When everything has come to an end, to a certain extent, you would feel a sense of loss because you can no longer see these people anymore..

Take school graduation (or National Service) for instance.

Everyday you see them, talk rubbish with them, hang out with them...blah blah blah etc.

Yes, through the journey, relationships formed.

When you graduate (the so-called ending point of journey I would put it), you go different ways.

Then, somehow you would start to recall what you've went through with this bunch of classmates or NS platoon mates.

Be it good or bad, nice or crazy. Anything that counts. Fond memories eh?

Angeline would still be responsible for YCM welfare..particularly YCM Alumni gatherings. Hahaha.

I've joined NYF Alumni. Awaiting further news about that.

Relax, thanks to mobile technology, we all can still keep in touch via handphone or MSN and hang out together one of these days!!!!

3 or 5 or 10 years down the road, we are still Young Changemakers! (Somemore we are the pioneer batch!!!) Hehehe!!!
